College Internships: My First Time

Summer is gone, but for some college students it’s still internship season! We all know that internships are an important part of our college education, so we need to be prepared to use all our knowledge and skills to tackle it successfully. It’s scary, but exciting. It was scary for me because it was my first time and I had no idea what to do during the interviews, what attire to wear — stuff like that. It was exciting because it was an opportunity to learn, experience new things, and meet new people.

Enhance but Don’t Oversell Yourself

Imagine applying for a job where the selection committee had narrowed down their choices to you and only one other applicant, where your qualifications and skills matched each other’s. Then during the panel interview, the panel surprises the both of you by asking if you were familiar with a particular software program. The job ad didn’t say that the successful applicant should have this particular skill in order to get the job; the job actually involved other duties and responsibilities that both you and the other applicant had.
Now imagine that your competitor shook his head and said, “No, I’m sorry, that’s outside of my skill set.”
