Yolanda Javellana, Political Science major.
We meet some interesting — and inspiring — young students when we hold CareerCamp events in colleges around the metro. Now we start letting them talk about their career plans.
Yolanda Javellana is a Political Science major at UP Diliman. She was one of the organizers of CareerCamp at UP.
Why did you choose to major in political science?
“I honestly don’t know why, but I always thought PolSci was the right course for me. I’ve always been interested in analyzing power and relationships between individuals and groups so it turned out to be the right choice.”
What’s been the best thing about it?
“It really gives you different perspectives on things and it really pushes you to think critically about topics and issues. I love how there is never one right answer and it all depends on the models, paradigms, and theories you use.”
Unexpected useful skill:
“Bossing people around. I try to do it nicely though, and I have to admit it gets work done a lot quicker.”
What kind of career do you want to have after graduation?
“I’m leaning towards specializing in something, maybe the environment, urban planning, or military defense. I’d want to work in a think tank as a consultant and hopefully put one up myself, though think tanks aren’t that popular here in the Philippines.”
What have you been doing to prepare for it?
“Right now, I’m interning as a researcher while being active in my organizations to gain experience in both working as part of group and working in the corporate sector. I’m also taking classes which are relevant to my fields of interest to see if they really are for me. I’ll be taking further studies, whether here or abroad, in the future to be able to build my expertise and specialization.”
