Are you a student planning on having a part-time job? Have you narrowed down the jobs you are willing to take? Have you weighed the pros and cons of being a part-time employee?
Part-time work while studying is no walk in the park. A number of factors need to be considered before taking that leap of faith.
Have a Self-Assessment
A self-assessment is regarded as the most critical step at trying your hand at a part-time job. Identify the reasons why you want to work while studying. Is it because you would like to have extra money to spend? Or because you would like to immerse yourself in the real world while still in college?
Know your Priorities
Identify your short and long-term goals. These will help you stay focused on your objective. Ask yourself, are you willing to fulfill your short-term goals? Or would you rather focus on your studies and work your way to a degree, instead?
Have your willingness checked
Ask yourself if you are willing to make sacrifices once you become a working student. Are you willing to give up your free time from school to attend to work? Are you motivated to work, or are just forced or pressured into doing so? Do you even need to have a part-time job in the first place?
Willingness comes from within. Lack of motivation results in poor performance and nobody wants to deliver subpar work.
Prepare!
There is a big difference between the demands of work and school. Adapt to the new environment you wish to enter by preparing yourself.
Know the nature of the company as well as the position you would fill. Doing so helps make you mentally and physically prepared to face the challenges of the job. That’s exactly how life after college will be and it pays to cultivate this discipline while you’re still in school.
