To commemorate national hero Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday anniversary, MyRizal is holding an essay writing contest called PreMYo Rizal. This contest is open to elementary students in grades V and VI, high school students in the 3rd and 4th year levels, and college students.
For elementary students, contestants should write an essay in Filipino answering the question “Kung nabubuhay si Rizal ngayon, ano ang nais mong sabihin o itanong sa kanya?” (“If Rizal were alive today, what would you like to say to him or ask him?”) Contestants from high school should express their ideas or feelings towards a character in either of Jose Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo in the context of today’s Philippine society and political reality. The essay should show a study of Rizal’s characters that leads to a better understanding of his ideas in his novels and contemporary Philippine society.
For both elementary and high school levels, the winner from each school shall compete for the division level elimination rounds. Whoever wins in the division level shall compete in the regional level competition. The top three (3) regional winners will be submitted to the DepEd Special Events Unit by 31 October 2011.
Contestants from college should choose between one of two categories: the Filipino essay and the English essay. Submissions should be unpublished works of 5,000 words, and written in the following themes:
English theme: “The Relevance of Rizal Today”
Filipino theme: “Ang Diwa ni Rizal sa Kasalukuyan”
