“Hi! I just graduated last sem. I applied to several companies but the first job offer I got is not related to my course. Should I take it anyway?” – Jenny, QC
Thanks for your question, Jenny! We got Erlinda Esguerra, a management consultant (and former guidance counselor) to give you an answer.
Your first job can be the start of a long career, or just that — your first job. I suggest that you not stress over what it all means for your destiny, and evaluate the job offer by itself. Is it something you’re qualified to do? Will you be compensated fairly for it? And, most importantly, is it for a good, stable company?
Entering the world of work can be intimidating, but joining a company that is very professional and stable can help you develop good corporate habits early in your career. These companies usually have dress codes, fancy ways to log in your time, several levels of bosses, and a thick manual of rules and regulations. It may sound too strict or boring to you, but in this environment you’ll learn professionalism, how to be on time, how to manage your workload efficiently, and how to take responsibility for your actions.
If you take the job at a “big, stable, boring” company and decide you’re too much of a free spirit for it, then it’s all right to move on. But remember that a certain level of professionalism will always be expected of you, whether you’re working toward a career related to your course, or just a job that pays the bills.
